Great car. All stock components. I have the original tonneau cover for the convertible top. All original books, spare keys, fobs, the emergency tire inflator as well as the window sticker.
I have been the only owner of this vehicle and purchased it Valencia BMW in 1998. Its been maintained regularly with Redline or Castrol synthetic products. The car is extremely low mileage for its age. I have always garaged it or kept it under a car cover. The vehicle has a one year old custom-fit Covercraft car cover, which will come with the vehicle.
BMW only made 10,000 of these wolf-in-sheep's clothing killer cars for the North American Market (1998-2002) and a little over 1000 in cosmos black. The 98 model had 240hp and weighed slightly over 3000lbs with a redline at 6,500RPM. It could do 0-60 in 5.5 seconds and had an electronically limited top speed of 140mph according to the magazines. The engine itself was hand assembled, balanced and tuned by BMW's M-technique group. The Euro version had 300+ hp, which I think you can achieve by swapping out the ECU.
KBB lists the private party value of my car at $13,000 in "Very Good" condition. For transparency's sakes here are the minor issues that I have found with my car, which don't prevent me from driving and enjoying it, but I thought you should know so that we don't keep emailing back and forth.
Exterior first: 1) The chrome wheels have the typical curb scuffs 2) The rubber trim will need replacement: around the antenna hole and door handles. 3) The power top mechanism works perfectly (However, I have it in manual mode right now because the hydraulic oil in the power drive unit needs to be topped off). Also, the top itself will require alignment as it leaks around the side windows during rainstorms and car washes. 4) Last but not least, the car hood and bumper have picked up stone chips, but as you can tell from the photos, the overall paint of the vehicle is tip-top.
Interior: 1) The leather is in great shape. 2) The instruments, dash and original 6CD, radio tape player work; I can't vouch for the tape player (I don't have any tapes to test). Also, the center armrest cassette holder broke a long time ago. I removed the holder and turned the center armrest into a covered storage bin for small items 3) The plastic seatbelt holders, which were built into the outboard side of both seats have broken due to temperature and age, simply a poor design by BMW 4) The felt trim behind the passenger seats that covers the rear cross-member is loose and needs to re-seated properly with adhesive 5) The driver's seat slides forward on its track by 1/3" during hard braking.
Mechanicals: 1) The engine and transmission are brilliant! The handling is still exceptional. 2) The ride is still firm. 3) The vehicle still has the original clutch, which works great, but the engagement point has gotten soft over the years. The car rides on Sumitomo tires that are like new with plenty of tread life.
Electricals: 1) The windows function well 2) The AC compressor works well and the alternator charges well 3) The fan speed only works on max setting, could be dirty contacts 4) The fuel gauge occasionally bounces up and down and sits at zero when tank is full; this was a design flaw with all E36 BMWs. 5) The left headlight is dimmer than the right and dims further when in high beam mode 6) the SRS warning sign is always on.
It passed smog inspection in 2018 and the registration is valid until 2019.
