Seller Description

Up for sale is my registered, insured, and drivable project of an S54 M Roadster. Silver exterior, black interior and completely stock from the factory. Your basic 4-second BMW-bread-and-butter inline 6 cylinder non-turbo rocket booster.

First off, it has a rebuilt Georgia title (in my name) and is road worthy, currently registered and insured. It was an impact on the front right corner, so light that even the original headlights were reused. No airbags were deployed. No welds on the shock tower or frame. I've driven it about 2,000 miles in the past year with no adverse affects from any repairs. (I bought it already repaired and have taken it through the GA full inspection in order to title it.)

The mileage is correct at approximately 51,900. It passes emissions just fine. No warning lights on or electronic niggles. It starts, runs, and drives reliably and is a blast to drive -- I've taken it a couple of times with the CCA up into the hills for weekend drives. It willingly blasts to 60, 100 mph without blinking an eye. I replaced the battery with a new Interstate one last year. The interior is in great shape with no detractors other than the leather is a bit hard (I've been conditioning it regularly, hoping it comes back to life) and some plastic items listed below. The AC blows cold, the heated seats work. All lights and bulbs work. No demons whatsoever.

So, now, on to what makes it a project car:

1. A brand new convertible top of German Sonnendeck material is included, uninstalled (I purchased it 6 months ago). The one on the car is original (in my opinion) and holds out the rain, but has some needs in the folding areas and along the door seals. I've been using it as is, even had it in the rain a few times with no worries. Still, it's an old top.

2. The raise / lower motor is weak, and is showing low hydraulic fluid visually, but it does work as designed.

3. It does not have keyless entry (yes, that was optional from the dealer/factory). The power locks work. However, the exterior door lock cylinders where the key fits only spin. The only way to lock and unlock the car via the power locks is from the trunk lock. And the doors and trunk lock correctly via the trunk lock.

4. Both seats need seat bushings and are slide-y (Common problem in all Z3s). New bushings are included. Installation is a common DIY.

5. Both seats have plastic side shoulder-level seatbelt guides that are magoo. I actually have two new holders (BMW parts) but to install them the seat leather must be removed. Manual workaround is to be flexible and reach back for the shoulder belt.

6. The exterior temperature sensor is non-op. Surprisingly, the sort-of-working exterior temperature sensor I found and removed from the car is the cheaper e36-based sensor and not the $250 M-Roadster specific one. The factory wiring is present and non-hacked.

7. It needs a thermostat. The one in the car is stuck open. The car will come to temp in warm weather like we have now even with the thermostat wide open. I purchased the thermostat, and it's included but uninstalled.

8. The factory radio is showing CODE; the ones provided by the dealer don't work (had them try 3 times). So the head unit will need to be replaced. I have a new aftermarket radio with bluetooth, new, that's included but uninstalled. I do not know if the speakers work because I've never had a working radio.

9. I have new factory M floormats! No longer made by BMW. Currently uninstalled to keep them so fresh, so clean.

10. I have had the rearview mirror rebuilt (common problem to have the mirror's auto-dim go dark). However, I can't tell if it actually auto-dims anymore. Looks great, though!

11. I've never had the tires balanced, which have good, even tread -- more than 50% life remaining -- or the alignment done. That said, you can feel a rolling bump at low speed that feels like a flat spot on the tire. The rear left tire has fix-a-flat in it (I did that) and it seems to be holding well.

12. The valve cover gasket is leaking at the back of the engine. Got the gasket and it's included, uninstalled.

13. The trunk light lens is missing. Easily replaceable.

14. The front bumper cover will not align due to its plastic tabs being broken on both sides. It stays on fine, but is about 5mm too low. You might be able to Macguyver a fix. Of course, there are lots of scrapes and parking stop ouchies on the front bumper cover. It's not broken, though. Similarly, the front plastic happy funtime puzzle pieces are largely MIA -- one of the brake ducts from the front bumper cover to the front wheelwells, undercar plastic rock guard, plastic grill for the lower part of the bumper cover. There may be others. It stays in place, but don't look too closely! That emperor ain't got no clothes!

15. The rear shock mounts are rattling. Not a difficult DIY. You can't really hear them with the top down :) I think I even purchased replacements, and thy're included if I did.

16. I haven't changed any fluids but the oil since I've owned it (I'm using Mobil1 full synthetic). Plan on doing a transmission / differential / hydraulic / brake fluid flush, just for good measure. It only has 51k miles, but the fluids may be 14 years old. Same thing with the filters. I haven't replaced any filter but the oil one since I've owned it. It's not showing any signs of needing any fluids or filters, but I have no clue how old they are.

17. The wheels, while original, have some permanent brake dust scars. Luckily, in 2001+ they went with the less-shiny wheels so you can hardly tell from 5 feet.

I'm sure there are other things... this is just what comes to mind. $10,000 is FIRM! Title is in my name and in-hand. I don't have a good excuse for selling. I guess it is just that there are lots of fixes to be done but I don't have tons of time to do them.

Please excuse the dirt in the pictures. I didn't wash the car before taking them and we've had a LOT of pollen lately.

About as cheap of S54 as you'll ever find. It definitely needs some work, but the current owner has done most of the diagnosis for you. It will make someone a nice project.
