The Bad
- Car was rear-ended in Mar 2004 (62K).
It received the following replacement parts, refinish and paint.
Trunk Lid (41-62-2-467-572)
Rear Light (63-21-2-695-040)
Rear Panel (51-12-7-893-082)
Cvr Trunk Lid (51-13-2-496-716)
Bumper Shock Left (51-12-8-399-213)
Bumper Shock Right (51-12-8-399-214)
Bumper Carrier (51-12-2-268-674)
Cover (51-71-8-400-107)
Carfax reports there was structural damage, but...I have removed the bumper to inspect and found no evidence of structural damage. I only found some small dents behind the right rear tail lamp (See pics). The paint matches fine, the panel gaps are consistent and there have been no alignment issues since the repair.
- 4 spot welds have popped in the rear trunk floor. These were popped when I purchased the vehicle and no additional welds have popped while I have owned it. This is a fairly common issue for Z3's.....especially the higher powered M models. I have just been watching them with the intention of installing a Randy Forbes reinforcement kit if additional welds started to go.
- It has the common glovebox sag. This can easily be fixed cheaply with a kit off of eBay (netlocksusa).
- The driver side seat bolster has a small hole in it.
- The top appears to be original. There are no holes and it is watertight, but it starting to show it's age. The rear window is a little hazy and scuffed, but you can still see out of it. The top motor works, but.....the lifting cylinder leaks fluid (needs a rebuild - $110 at http://www.tophydraulicsinc.com/). I hadn't gotten around to removing it and sending it out. In the interim, I have been raising and lowering it manually.
- Rims are all straight and true, but each one has some rash
- The paint on the front bumper has some hairline cracking on the lower air dam points and on the nose. Most likely associated with tapping a parking curb.
This car runs well, it is fun to drive, it has been well-maintained and still shines up nicely. It doesn't classify as "show" quality car, but it will be a good car for someone looking for a "driver" to enjoy.
