2000 BMW Z3 //M Roadster - Dinan stage 4
Has California CARB smog exemption stickers, and the 2000 model year doesn't require tailpipe testing.
Photo album with driving videos and 100+ high resolution pictures, available on request.
If you want a tweaked Z3 M that passes smog, no questions asked, then this one is both the right model year, has the right equipment to go _fast now, and tune for even more power by adding an M50 intake manifold and 24 lb injectors later if you don’t need to pass smog in California.
The Dinan tune and parts gives this engine outstanding smoothness, throttle response, and raw acceleration up to 7300 RPM in 1st and 2nd gear, 7k in 3-4-5.
Traction Control is modified to stop the engine from being cut off when the brakes are modulated.
Secondary throttle plate removed, and body modified and bored out. (see picture)
This flows as much or more air than replacing the secondary body with a right angle rubber boot,
with the advantage of not getting ASC fault lights.
Effectively, this allows much better acceleration off the line, and being able to stay on the gas through tight narrow cornering, with traction control keeping the tires on the road as you power on through.
All work has been done in the past year.
Engine is cooled through a new S54 style BMW radiator filled with BMW brand coolant and a bottle of Redline Water Wetter, with new 80C thermostat and 80/89 degree fan switch and new radiator hoses and cap, with a brass bleeder screw vs original plastic.
Fluids:
//Mobil 1 0W40 with BMW brand oil filter in the engine.
Redline 50/50 mix of MTL + D4 atf in the trans.
Redline 70w90 in the differential.
New BMW blue coolant + a bottle of Redline Water Wetter in the radiator.
ATE SL6, DOT4 type 6, brake fluid.
Light weight, high flow exhaust:
made by Dan from ABC Toy Garage.
Stainless steel Flowmaster series 50 muffler with 3" diameter pipe from a stainless steel Flowmaster Y-connector right behind the catalytic converters. All Oxygen sensors are in place and working correctly. From the cats back, pipes and muffler is wrapped with 4" wide DEI titanium fabric exhaust. The sound is strong and gutteral without drone, but at a lower volume than you would expect for this kind of tone and air flow. The new exhaust is 52 pounds lighter than the original.
Battery: AGM type Deka race battery weighing 20 pounds, less than half the weight of the original.
This much weight lightened from over the rear axle really makes a noticeable handling improvement.
Tires and wheels:
Fully forged SSR Integral type A wheels, polished. Not perfect, but pretty nice.
BMW OE Motorsport wheel emblems attached in the “M” position to the wheels.
BMW OE new style high speed aluminum valve stems, for added safety.
BMW OE factory valve caps.
Bridgestone RE71R tires, 18x8 with 245/40 x 18 front, 18x9 with 275/35 x 18 rear. The beefier tires give outstanding handling with improved ride comfort. The lightweight wheels remove 28 pounds of unsprung weight.
The original BMW M RoadStar wheels are also included.
Suspension:
Springs from a Z4M, adapted into the Z3M.
Bilstein B8 front sport struts.
Bilstein B6 Sport rear shocks spec’ed for the Z4M, to match the Z4M rear springs.
Whiteline 27mm adjustable swaybar with new Meyle HD end links.
KYB cartridge bearing style upper strut mounts, reversed side to side for more negative camber, with Z4M rotating bearing upper spring cups.
BMW OE camber bolts to allow camber adjustment.
Aluminum front lower control arms, lowering unsprung weight by another 8 pounds.
Delrin Lower Control Arm Bushings, from Condor Racing.
New Lemforder tie rods.
Zimmerman Sport front vented brake rotors with Akebono pads.
AKG urethane upper shock mounts.
New Meyle rear swaybar end links.
Powerflex purple urethane differential mount.
Differential:
3.46 ratio Torsen torque sensing limited slip, sourced from a 2001 Z3 3.0 automatic. A huge difference in how the car can keep its rear wheel glued to the road versus the original 3.23 ratio conventional limited slip.
The shorter 3.46 gears combined with the taller 25.7" tires makes a great combination of increased traction, along with better ride comfort and quicker acceleration, without the engine revving out too soon on the highway.
Interior:
Estoril blue with black leather seats, steering wheel, door panels and dashboard. Both seats in good condition.
Estoril interior and exterior, with the blue instead of black insulated convertible top, is a less common, and somewhat coveted color combination.
Electric seat adjustors all work smooth and strong.
New Delrin seat rail bushings.
I cleaned and greased the rails and mechanisms, using Mobil 1 red grease
Seat heaters work on all settings, no problems.
Shoulder belt guides all good strongly attached.
LED Lighting:
Interior, console, and dashboard bulbs replace with cool white LED bulbs. Bright and sharp flashing, shown in the video.
LED corner marker lights, front and rear.
Phillips LED headlight bulbs. Wow, what an improvement over the original halogen bulbs.
Sound:
Alpine model CDEHD1378T, CD Receiver head unit. Am/fm/cd/bluetooth/Pandora, w/USB, auxilliary, and microphone inputs.
Alpine 40 Watts/ channel power amp.
Alpine 6” coax front kick panel speakers.
Other original Harmon Kardon speakers present and working fine.
Heating and A/C:
Switches, sliders, knobs, fan, and vents work correctly. A/C blows _cold, heat blows _hot. Vent adjusters move easily through their full range of motion.
Top with rear window:
Sound insulated, blue. Was replaced a few years ago by the original owner. Previous year M Roadsters didn't have the sound and noise insulation that the 2000 came with.
Other:
3-1/2" Silicon rubber intake air boot, increase MAF flow by 9%.
BMW original black tonneau cover.
New tri-color BMW //M emblems.
SlipLo curb guards on the bottom of the front bumper cover.
Antenna grommet replaced.
